Slips, Trips and Falls

Slips, trips and falls injure more WSU employees, students and visitors than any other cause of incident. Winter weather contributes significantly to slips and falls. When walking in snowy or icy conditions:

  • Wear slip resistant shoes or boots;
  • Consider traction devices with steel coils or cleats;
  • Plan your route, utilize walkways with snowmelt, over steam tunnels or those prioritized for snow removal;
  • Put your phone away, avoid distraction and have your hands available to catch yourself.

Slips and falls also occur when indoor surfaces become wet from water tracked indoors. If you observe areas requiring snow or ice removal, or wet floors in buildings, contact Facilities Services (335-9000 in Pullman). Similarly, if you observe trip and fall hazards resulting from uneven surfaces, contact us so we can prioritize their repair.

Remember, slip, trip and fall prevention training is required for all WSU employees, see our training webpage for details.
