Exposure Control Plan

Any workplace where it is reasonably anticipated that employees might encounter bloodborne pathogens will have a Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.  The plan contains the following elements.

Exposure Determination

  • A list of job titles and tasks covered by the Exposure Control Plan.

Engineering Controls

  • A list of equipment used to separate employees from risk of exposure.

Work Practices

  • Specific procedures and practices to be used to protect employees from exposure.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Required PPE assigned to protect employees from exposure risks after engineeing controls and work practices have been implemented.

Signs, Labels and Color Coding

  • Labels used to communicate when biohazards are present.

  • How and where bloodborne pathogens related records will be kept.

Exposure Control Plan Review

  • The process for reviewing the plan on an annual basis, and whenever there are new or modified tasks, revised position descriptions, or new technologies affecting exposure.
