Basic Asbestos Terms and Definitions:
Asbestos Containing Material (ACM) means any material containing more than one percent asbestos. Common examples of ACM will be described later in this training.
Certified Asbestos Worker means an individual certified by the Department of Labor and Industries under WAC 296-65-010.
Friable Asbestos is asbestos-containing material (ACM) that can be reduced to powder by hand pressure when dry.
Good Faith Inspection is an inspection by certified inspectors which is conducted to determine whether materials to be worked on or removed contain asbestos.
Intact Asbestos means that the ACM has not been crumbled, pulverized, or otherwise deteriorated, causing the asbestos to be unbound to its matrix.
Friable ACM that is disturbed is presumed to be no longer intact.
Presumed Asbestos-Containing Material (PACM) means thermal system insulation and surfacing material found in buildings, vessels, and vessel sections
constructed no later than 1980 that are assumed to contain greater than one percent asbestos but have not been sampled or analyzed to verify or negate the presence of asbestos.
